SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the work that helps search engines find your website, understand what you offer and show it to the people searching for it. Done well, it brings in customers who are already looking for what you do.

What SEO is

Three questions search engines ask

Where a website appears in Google comes down, mostly, to how well it answers these.

  • Can we reach it and read it?Search engines send automated crawlers to read websites. Pages that are blocked, broken, slow or hidden behind scripts may never be shown. That’s technical SEO.
  • Does it answer the search? Each page needs to match what people actually type, in the words they use, with enough detail to be the best answer. That’s content and on-page SEO.
  • Can it be trusted?Links from other websites, genuine reviews and the same business details everywhere all tell search engines a business is real and well thought of.

Google uses a great many signals and changes them often, but most of them come back to those three.

Why it matters

People search before they buy

When someone needs a product or a service, a search is usually where they start, so being easy to find there matters.

Visits from search results don’t cost anything per click, unlike adverts, and a page that ranks well can keep bringing in enquiries for years. SEO works alongside word of mouth, social media and paid ads rather than replacing them.

It also tends to bring in people who are ready to act. Someone searching for “boiler repair Stockport” or “birthday cakes delivered Manchester” already knows what they want: they’re choosing who to get it from.

Is it worth it for you?

Signs SEO could help

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth finding out why.

  • You don’t appear when people search for what you doEven though you know customers are searching for it.
  • Competitors appear above youSometimes with websites that are older or thinner than yours.
  • Most enquiries come from word of mouth or adsAnd you’d like a steadier source that doesn’t stop when the budget does.
  • Traffic has droppedAfter a redesign, a new platform or a Google update, and nobody can say why.
  • A new website is on the wayThe best time to get SEO right is before it launches, not after.
  • Nobody has ever checkedPlenty of websites are built by people who don’t do SEO, so problems go unnoticed for years.

What SEO can and can’t do

SEO is a long-term investment rather than a switch you flip.

Technical fixes can show up within weeks, once Google crawls the pages again. New pages and content usually take months to build up. Results also depend on your competition and on Google itself, so nobody can honestly guarantee a position.

What I can do is remove the problems holding your website back, make sure search engines see the best version of it, and build pages around what your customers actually search for.

How I work

Evidence first, then a plan

Every finding is based on data, and explained in plain English.

  1. 01

    Crawl and measure

I crawl your website with tools like Lumar and look at your Google Search Console data, so every finding is based on evidence.

  2. 02

    Explain and prioritise

You get a clear list of issues: what each one is, why it matters and what fixing it involves, most important first.

  3. 03

    Fix

I fix the issues myself, or work alongside whoever looks after your website.

  4. 04

    Check

I make sure the fixes have been picked up, and keep an eye out for anything new.

Questions

Questions, answered.

If yours isn’t here, ask me: there’s no such thing as a silly question about your own website.

Ask me a question
What is SEO?

SEO stands for search engine optimisation: improving your website so search engines like Google can find it, understand it and show it to people searching for what you offer. It covers the technical side, the words on your pages, and the signals that show a business can be trusted.

Is SEO worth it for a small business?

Often, yes, especially if customers search for what you do. A small business can’t outspend big companies on adverts, but it can have the most useful page for a particular service or area. It depends on how people find businesses like yours, and I’ll tell you honestly if I think your money is better spent elsewhere.

Should I choose SEO or Google Ads?

Ads bring visits from the day they start and stop when you stop paying. SEO takes longer to build, but keeps working without a cost per click. Many businesses use both: ads for quick results, SEO for the long term.

How long until I see results?

Technical fixes can show up once Google crawls the affected pages again, which can take days or weeks. New content usually takes longer to build up. I’ll tell you what to expect for your website.

How much does SEO cost?

It depends on the size of your website and what it needs. A technical SEO audit starts at £995, local SEO and website migrations at £1,495, and ongoing SEO is priced in a proposal. You’ll have a fixed price before any work starts.

Can you guarantee first place on Google?

No, and be wary of anyone who does. Rankings depend on your competition and on Google itself. What I can do is fix the technical problems holding your website back, and help you build pages that deserve to rank.

Can you work on a website you didn’t build?

Yes. I’ll need access to your Google Search Console and, to make fixes, to your website or the person who manages it.
