Local SEO in Manchester: Found by customers nearby.

Local SEO is how a business that serves a particular area shows up when people nearby search for what it does: in the map results, and in the ordinary results underneath. For a business that relies on local customers, it’s one of the most valuable things to get right.

What it is

Searches with a place in them

Some searches name a town. Others, like “dog groomer near me”, don’t need to: Google works out where you are.

When a search is about somewhere nearby, Google shows a map with a few businesses beside it, then the usual list of websites underneath.

Which businesses appear depends on three things: how relevant they are to the search, how close they are to the person searching, and how well known and trusted they seem, from their reviews, the links to their website and how consistently their details appear across the web.

Local SEO works on all three, so that your website, your Google Business Profile and your reputation all point the same way.

Why it matters

Customers ready to get in touch

Local searches are often made by people who need something soon.

  • Ready to actSomeone searching for a service nearby usually wants it soon, so local searches tend to turn into calls, visits and bookings.
  • A fair fightYou’re up against other businesses in your area rather than national brands, so a small business can win.
  • Often on a phonePlenty of local searches happen on the move, so a call or directions button a tap away makes a difference.
  • It keeps workingA well-built local page and a steady flow of genuine reviews keep bringing people in long after the work is done.

Who it’s for

Businesses that serve an area

If your customers come to you, or you go to them, local SEO matters.

  • Shops, salons and clinicsAnywhere customers visit in person.
  • Trades and home servicesBuilders, plumbers, cleaners and anyone who travels to the customer.
  • Restaurants, cafés and venuesWhere people often decide where to go while they’re searching.
  • Professional servicesAccountants, solicitors and agents that people like to have close by.
Selling across the UK?

If customers never visit and you don’t travel to them, local SEO matters less. Technical SEO and pages built around what you sell are usually a better place to start.

What it involves

What you do, and where you do it

The pieces that help Google connect your business with searches nearby.

  • Pages for what you do, and whereA page for each service, and pages for the areas you genuinely cover, each with something local to say.
  • Local structured dataThe extra information that tells Google your business name, the areas you serve and your opening hours.
  • The same details everywhereYour business name, address and phone number matching on your website, your Google profile and the directories that matter.
  • ReviewsA simple way for happy customers to leave a Google review, and a plan for asking.
  • Directories that matterThe handful of listings worth having for your business and your area, all with identical details.
  • Calls and directions countedSo you can see which pages bring in calls, visits and enquiries.

Your Google profile

It stays in your hands

Your Google Business Profile is your business’s own listing, so it stays with you.

As part of the work, I check it against your website and give you a short list of changes, so the two say the same thing and support each other.

No copy-and-paste town pages

A page for every town with the same words and a different name is what Google calls a doorway page, and it can hold your whole website back. I only build area pages where there’s something genuinely local to say: how far it is, how to get there, the work you’ve done nearby.

Questions

Questions, answered.

If yours isn’t here, ask me: there’s no such thing as a silly question about your own website.

Ask me a question
What is local SEO?

It’s the part of SEO for searches about somewhere nearby, like “electrician in Sale” or “cafe near me”. It helps Google understand what your business does and where, so you show up on Google Maps and in the local results when people search.

What’s the difference between local SEO and SEO?

Local SEO is SEO for searches with a place in them, or where Google assumes one. It adds things ordinary SEO doesn’t need, like your Google Business Profile, reviews and pages for the areas you cover.

Do I need a shop or office for local SEO?

No. A business that travels to its customers can show up locally too, by setting the areas it serves on its Google Business Profile instead of showing an address. Google’s rules decide which fits your business, and I’ll check that with you.

Do I need a page for every town I cover?

No. Only where you can say something genuinely local. Copies with the town’s name swapped are what Google calls doorway pages, and they can hold the whole website back.

How long does local SEO take?

The changes to your website are usually live within a few weeks. Rankings take longer to build, often a few months, and reviews keep helping long after.

Do you manage our Google Business Profile?

No: it’s your business’s own listing, so it stays with you. I check it against your website and give you a short list of changes, so the two match.

How do we get more Google reviews?

Ask every happy customer, at the moment they’re happiest, with a direct link to leave one. Fake reviews, and reviews bought with hidden incentives, have been banned in the UK since April 2025, so it’s genuine ones only.

How much does local SEO cost?

From £1,495 as a one-off project, depending on how many services and areas you cover. You’ll have a fixed price before any work starts.
